DRIVE SMART is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing traffic related fatalities and injuries. We accomplish this by developing solutions to transportation safety issues and changing driving attitudes and behaviors, in partnership with schools, businesses, civic, community and government agencies.
This chapter was established in 1993 using CDOT funding through DRIVE SMART Colorado. Since then, DRIVE SMART has achieved sustainability and received national, state and local recognition for its work.
It is our philosophy that ‘It takes a generation to make a change’. We feel that our steady influence in the community allows to achieve our ultimate goal of saving lives one driver at a time, one car seat at a time, one booster seat at a time, one seat belt at a time, one vehicle at a time, one pedestrian at a time, one stop light at a time.
DRIVE SMART Staff
Amy J. Nichols, Executive Director
Following an extensive recruiting process DRIVE SMART has appointed Amy J Nichols as the agency’s new Executive Director. After the death of her 20-year-old son in a car crash ten years ago, Amy dedicated herself to helping other parents who have experienced the same devastation, and to preventing traffic fatalities. “My loss taught me the importance of turning tragedy and challenge into positive change,” she explains.
Amy comes to DRIVE SMART with extensive experience in traffic safety, having served on the board of the Brandon & Paul Foundation (committed to preventing teen traffic deaths) and the Colorado State Patrol Family Foundation. Her background includes fundraising, public speaking, nonprofit management, financial analysis and budgeting, and grief advising services.
“I am honored to be working for DRIVE SMART,” Amy says. “The DRIVE SMART team is a dedicated and passionate group, and I am fortunate to be a part of this organization devoted to traffic safety education for all ages. I am looking forward to continuing the mission of DRIVE SMART and to reaching out to our neighboring communities.”

After college graduation she found her passion for running and has participated in multiple full and half marathons. This lead to her career of Race Directing and she currently produces the REVEL Rockies Marathon & Half. REVEL Rockies’ beneficiary is DRIVE SMART and Anna is pleased to collaborate on the synergies of each organization.
Lurlie Bickford – Secretary
After years working in the volunteer sector including with PTA, Brownies and Girl Scouts, Odyssey of the Mind and Little League, I feel fortunate to have become a member of the founding board of DRIVE SMART. Transportation safety affects everyone. Everyone has a story of a friend or relative who has been impacted, and although car crashes are the most avoidable of all accidental injuries and fatalities, somehow they have been accepted as something that just happens. I work in prevention to change this perception, and to stop the tragedy of crashes that are not accidents. An Evergreen resident since 1990, I have worked in local businesses and have also supported several other local non-profits.
David Krieves – Board Member
Dave Krieves retired from his medical practice in Oregon in 2011 and moved to Colorado to be near his sons and their families. According to his oldest grandson (4 years old), he “used to be a doctor and is now a grandpa”. After dealing with numerous motor vehicle crash victims, he is passionate about preventing crashes, injuries and deaths and joined the Drive Smart board. He also does lots of community volunteering with organizations like Blue Spruce Kiwanis and Habitat for Humanity. His latest venture is working part time for 5280 Turf, his son’s artificial grass business.
